An Epicemiological Survey on Measles in a Rural Area, Macha-ri, 1971

Abstract
An epidemiological survey ws made toward 326 cases of measles in Macha area with the population of total 5,526 and 2,772 under 15 years old from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30, 1971 and following results were obtained:
1. The attack rate of measles during the 9 months was 11.7% among the total children under 15 years old, and the rate for the susceptible ones by history was 25.6% with the highest rate of 40.8% among age group of 1-2 years old.
2. The cases were seen throughout the months except January, most cases during April to September with highest number in June.
3. The secondary attack rates were 84.8% among the family susceptibles.
4. The spread of measles in the primary school classes were likly occured especially in the 1st year classes and in some extent in the 2nd year classes but negligibly in the 3rd year classes.
5. Recentry the trend of measles vaccination in this area was increased year by year. The side effects such as fever, rash, etc. were found in 15.9% out of 132 children immunized.
6. Out of 132 children immunized with measles vaccine 36.4% were attacked by measles after the vaccination. Comparing it with the attack rate of 25.6% among the susceptibles, the effect of the vaccination was negligible.
It may be seemed to be due to the use of useless vaccines which are beyond expired date or stored improperly.
7. The fatality rates were 0.3% among the measles patients.
8. Three recurrent cases of suspected measles were found.
